Oral epithelial cells are a type of epithelial cells. Human oral epithelial cells are flat, polygonal and irregular in shape. All walls of the oral cavity are covered with mucosa. Oral epithelial cells are mainly distributed in the buccal regions on both sides of the oral cavity. In vertical sections of the epithelium, cells vary in shape. The single layer of basal cells adjacent to the basement membrane is low columnar and consists of stem cells with proliferative and differentiation potential; some daughter cells migrate toward the superficial layer. Above the basal layer are several layers of polygonal cells, followed by several layers of fusiform or flat cells. Only the outermost cell layers are flattened. Basal cells continuously divide and proliferate to replace senescent or injured superficial cells that have shed. The connective tissue deep to the stratified squamous epithelium is rich in capillaries, facilitating the nutrition of the stratified squamous epithelium.

Immortalized Human Oral Mucosal Epithelial Cells were transduced with lentivirus carrying the SV40 gene and puromycin resistance. Tests confirmed that the cells are free from bacterial and fungal contamination, exhibit excellent proliferation potential, and can be passaged 10-20 times in vitro.
